From neglect to abuse

An autobiography

Born into a family that seemed to have everything—a grand house with landscaped gardens, multiple vehicles, and more—Nwabisa Mbuli lived in a home devoid of affection. She grew up believing love and displays of care had to be earned through perfect obedience, absolute agreement, or flawless behaviour.

Yet, being a spirited individual who challenged the status quo, she struggled to fit into the rigid mould her mother had created for her.

Desperate to fill the emotional void, she sought love through romantic relationships, but her approach was shaped by a flawed understanding of affection. Fearing rejection, she avoided deep attachments, preferring to leave at the first sign of trouble. She gravitated towards men who were emotionally unavailable and abusive, drawn to the familiarity of pain and neglect.

Instead of the comfort and fulfilment she yearned for, these choices only deepened her wounds, as she unwittingly allowed the wrong people into her life.

From Neglect to Abuse is a gripping and heartfelt exploration of love, pain, and the journey to self-discovery and healing.

Nwabisa N. Mbuli is a divorced mother of four currently studying towards her Masters in Psychology from the University of South Africa (UNISA).  She is passionate about mental health matters, justice and equality. She resides in Bloemfontein, South Africa with her children.
